Mer de Glace | Chamonix News

The current Glaciorium which was built in 2012, is planning to be renovated into a world class attraction, with a lot to learn and discover about the mystical world of Glaciers.

Theres been many meetings over the past few years to discuss the future of the Montenvers, one of which is how to combat the ageing site with decreasing depth of ice.  An interesting idea put forward was to move the current station further up the valley, thus increasing the glacial depth of the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice).

The Glaciorium is planned to be moved down into the rock face hanging over the famous ice valley, this will increase the size of the Glaciorium and showcase much more about this alluring world of ice!

Fun Fact | Did you know deep under the Mer de Glace hides a EDF power station… They tunnel into the ice opening & closing “pockets” of melt water, then later turn it into electricity through the use of turbines.

Have you ever seen the tele-cabin in the woods under the Mer de Glace… Thats the private tele-cabin for the EDF workers and their equipment.
