Tragedy struck yesterday on one of the most famous Chamonix hikes.
This Sunday on the popular trail that runs between Lac Blanc and the Col des Montets, a 68 year old hiker lost his life.
It was early afternoon on the last section of the hike just above the Col des Montets, the gentlemen whilst hiking with his wife was hit by a rock when a landslide happened up above the trail. Later the PGHM confirmed the gentlemen was hit by a falling rock of 70cm in diameter.
Could this be yet another sad sign that the permafrost is melting much quicker than first thought?
The Chamonix Mairie has banned access to the trail until further notice, signs have been put up on both ends of the trail.
Hiked there a few weeks ago ? My thoughts go out to the family.
