Chamonix rockfall, Up to 100,000 cubic meters of rock broke away from the l’éperon Tournier covering the Glacier des Pèlerins.
What was a very famous route back in the 1970s & 80s, the Eperon Tournier has not been so popular in recent years. Many faces were given a 3d laser scan last year for scientific research, l’éperon Tournier being one of them. Ludovic Ravanel one of the leading geologists from Chambéry will be heading up the new 3d scan planned for this week. Its thought to be in the region of 100,000 cubic meters of granite that broke off, last time this happened was Les Drus Back in 2005 at a whooping 292,000 cubic meters.
Stay tuned for an update a soon as the new scans come in.
